Eligibility and Selection Criteria

Eligibility for the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship for the fall of 2021 is available to students from all over the world. Priority for applicants will go to

  • Students from abroad who have overcome a variety of barriers and obstacles and also those who come from diverse and under-represented social and economic backgrounds.
  • At at 3.8 GPA equivalent out of 4.0 GPA (or in the top 10% of the graduating class) for grades 9-12.
  • A clear dedication to leadership, volunteering and community service, as well as to improving the lives of those within their own country.
  • Students who meet at least one characteristics:
    • 95+ TOEFL IBT (all scores must have a score of at or above 20)
    • A sub-score of at least 24+ are possible on the TOEFL paper-based test (Taken post May 31st of 2017)
    • 7.0+ IELTS 7.0+ (all scores must have a score of 6.0 or higher)
    • 33 minimum SAT Reading Sub-score
    • 29 minimum ACT English
    • 65 minimum PTE
    • 120+ Duolingo (all sub-scores must be at least 110)
  • Students who are registered in high school or secondary school and are graduating in June 2021.
    Important: Students studying in the IB system must be prepared to complete their IB diploma, which includes at least three HL subjects. Students taking part under the British A-Levels system should complete at minimum three A levels and have completed 13 years of their studies by the end of August 2021.

Ineligibility: You’re NOT eligible to apply if

  1. You are an U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or a dual citizen of U.S. and another country.
  2. You are currently enrolled in or have started any postsecondary study at a different university in your country of origin or in the United States.
  3. You finished in secondary school prior to the year 2019.

Scholarship Merits

The AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship will cover;

  • All the funding of AU costs (full tuition as well as accommodation and board) for a single international student who needs visa (preferably an F-1 or J-1 student visa) to pursue studies in the United States.
  • The scholarship cannot pay for non-billable costs such as the obligatory health insurance and books, air tickets and other expenses (approximately U.S.$4,000 annually).
